UNIVERSITY OF CALIFORNIA, SANTA CRUZ ELECTRICAL ENGINEERING DEPARTMENT
POSTDOCTORAL SCHOLAR, OPTICAL THIN FILMS
The Electrical Engineering Department at the University of California, Santa Cruz (UCSC) invites
applications for the position of a postdoctoral scholar in the field of optical thin films: synthesis and
characterization. A challenging materials science project is currently in progress developing unique
optical devices required for harvesting highly concentrated solar light. The successful candidate will be
expected to have hands-on experimental experiences in the field of synthesizing and characterizing
optical thin films (e.g., metal oxides) and will be also expected to fabricate optical devices to be tested
for solar thermal and daylighting applications.
RANK: Postdoctoral Scholar – Employee
SALARY: Commensurate with qualifications and experience.
BASIC QUALIFICATIONS: A Ph.D. degree in materials science or related field with hands-on
experimental experiences in conducting research projects in the fields related to synthesis of metal
oxide thin films and characterization of their physical properties, in particular, optical properties.
PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS: Demonstrated experiences in: 1. conducting synthesis of metal
oxide (e.g., titanium oxide, aluminum oxide, hafnium oxide, and silicon oxide) thin films by sputtering.
2. conducting characterization (structural and optical properties) of metal oxide thin films by various
analytical tools including electron microscopes and ellipsometry. 3. conducting design of experiment to
tune the synthesis processes to optimize physical properties (e.g., optical properties) of metal oxide
thin films. 4. conducting multiple tasks in a large project team (the candidate must have good
communication skills and interpersonal skills).
POSITION AVAILABLE: January 1, 2014.
TERM OF APPOINTMENT: The initial appointment is for one year, with the possibility of
reappointment for another year. Reappointment is contingent upon availability of funding. For
appointments within the University of California, a total duration of an individual’s postdoctoral service
may not exceed five years, including Postdoctoral service at other institutions.
TO APPLY: An application package must include; a letter of application (1 page), a curriculum vitae, a
list of publications, a summary of relevant experience (2 pages), and three names of professional
references with email addresses. The application package should be emailed to Prof. Nobuhiko
Kobayashi (email@example.com) as a single PDF file.
